I. About the Festival Sand sculpture is a kind of art that brings sculpture, culture, painting, architecture, sports and entertainment together. The stunningly beautiful, true-to-life, and environment-friendly sand sculptures have to be built by multiple persons, and is therefore a good way to cultivate team spirit. No only so, where ever there are sand sculptures, people swarm in to that place to appreciate this fun modern art. There are many beaches suitable for holding sand sculpture festivals throughout Taiwan, such as Fulong, Feitsui Bay, Shalun, Kengting, Qiding, and Sanyuan. The beach area between Yanliao and Fulong of the Northeast Coast, i.e. the Gold Beach, is especially a good fit for its soft quartz sand. The quartz sand is flexible and highly adhesive when mixed with water. The Gold Beach has thus been certified by the World Sand Sculpting Association as the best sand sculpting site in Taiwan.

To promote sand sculpting in Taiwan, the Fulong International Sand Sculpture Festival was launched in 2008 so that domestic sand sculptors can show their works more formally and exchange ideas with their international counterparts. The festival, now in its sixth year, attracts more visitors each year. From 600,000 in 2008, 800,000 in 2009, 100,000 in 2010, 350,000 in 2011, to 260,000 in 2012, the festival continues to expand its scale and introduce more creativity to the island public. This year, it even works with private groups like Lih Pao Construction and Fullon Hotels to make the festival more diverse and fun. In light of this, the 2013 Fulong International Sand Sculpture Festival is expected to be more flamboyant than before.
