2009/The True Story of Silver Grass of the Caoling Historic Trail

Time travel from the future was the main theme of 2009. Combined with the concept of
environmental protection, this year’s festival aimed to recall peoples’ awareness of protecting our
mother Earth. A fictitious character from the future, Xiao Ming, introduced the idea of environmental
conservation in the present. Xiao Ming came from the future, traveling through time to look for the
disappearing silver grasses on the Northeast Coast. The story told visitors that due to environmental
pollution the century-old silver grasses were wiped out in a night. The host unit hoped to arouse
peoples concern for the environment and to increase awareness of and to cherish the natural beauty
of the area before it is too late. The mountain bandits were again very popular characters this year.
However instead of asking for trouble, this year the bandits renounced evil and helped promote the
芒花 importance of environmental protection. In addition to the regular activities, a free body painting The Legend of the Silver Grass
art exhibition was offered at the Fulong Visitors’ Center. A Photograph Contest, ‘Shooting Yilan,’

was held for the first time and at Dali Temple and free porridge for a safety blessing was also very
popular. Since 2002, visitor numbers were up to 550,000 in total over eight years.
