ყᖵஔf Documented Evidence of the Art of Sand
Sculpture Starts About 500 Years Ago

Sand sculpting, as an art form, has been around for centuries. No
one knows just how long, it is even suggested that the ancient
Egyptians made sand models of their pyramids. Sand sculpture is
thought to have predated ancient cave paintings and therefore
would have been the first form of human communication through art
before ancient humans acquired the ability to speak using language.
However, documented evidence of sand sculpture only starts about
five hundred years ago. During the fourteenth century, records show
that poet, Balaram Das, created devotional sand sculptures in his
native India. It wasn’t until 1897, when Philip McCord created an
amazing sand likeness of a drowned woman and her baby, that the
first known modern sand sculpture was made. Until then, this long
evolution has resulted in a unique art form that is now called ‘sand
art’. It is defined as the practice of molding and shaping sand into an
artistic form, like a sand sculpture, a sand painting or other form of
shaped sand. The art of sand sculpting is unique in that a patron is
able to watch the piece actually being formed and shaped as the
artist works. This type of ‘art in action’ is certainly fascinating for
people of all ages around the one hundred and twenty eight coastal
                                  countries that practice it.
