The work, Roman Siege-Battle Glory, created by Portuguese artist Rodrigo Ferreira and
German sculptor Yousef Bakir, described the story of Rome. War is cruel. As the Chinese
saying goes “one general achieves renown over the dead bodies of ten thousand
soldiers.” Though Caesar got the glory of victory, it was on the sacrifice of thousands of
Roman soldiers’ lives. It is the sculptor’s hope that through this creation, people can
realize the importance of peace.

Creating works from the young age of sixteen, Rodrigo composes not
only sand sculpture but also ceramic art. Making his debut in 2001 at
the European Contemporary Art Exhibition in Porto, he later went on to win numerous
awards in Estonia, Finland and Russia.

Coming from Cologne, Germany, Yousef came to Taiwan for the
first time this year. At the age of forty, he was once a member of
the European Sand Sculpture Team. He is well known in Germany, participating in
numerous international competitions for over twenty years.
