古道五大植物生態

據清朝古籍姚瑩的《臺北道里記》上所載，昔日之
古道沿路林木茂盛，仰不見天日，其旁並聞深澗流
水聲，另亦描述該步道具有許多無法命名的古樹與
怪鳥，林中多木質藤木，當地人取其藤心而食。古
籍所描繪的其實就是一幅亞熱帶雨林的生態實景，
而藤心可食的植物，可能就是黃藤。

由此可見昔日古道林木鬱閉的情況，但隨著古道之
開闢，開墾與森林破壞隨之而至。北宜公路開通
後，古道也隨之煙沒，後雖經造林綠化，然而在草
嶺稜線附近，在氣候的影響下迄今仍保留著草生地
的狀況。而歷經大約半世紀的人工林，林木目前也
正在進行著天然演替的現象，亦即原生的天然林木
芒花

草嶺古道沿線大約可見284種維管束植物，其中47
種為蕨類植物，原生棵子植物只有一種，雙子葉植
