9 客棧遺址
「大里客棧遺址」位於草嶺古道大里段之「護管所」與「虎
字碑」間。據訪談得知,清代時人多以步行往返各地,因此
當時過草嶺古道往返臺北、宜蘭的旅人頗多,行程皆需2日左
右。因此行至此段山路(約為中途),由臺北往宜蘭方向的人
會在過虎字碑後的客棧落宿,自宜蘭往臺北方向的人就在遠
望坑一帶的客棧落宿。
當時留宿客棧多為欲至基隆或臺北賣「什細仔」的行商者或
牛販,「什細仔」多挑運婦女用品沿路至各聚落叫賣;牛販
則多牽牛至基隆販賣。客棧營至清末,因經營者過世而停
業,後由外地之人整修作為居民使用,據說歷經盧江輝、廬
江海、江海輝、劉阿海等人遷入居住,多以養豬或種番薯維
生,後來盧宅主人去世,且草嶺古道之交通用途變小,後代
子孫便不再營運,任其荒廢,目前僅留下些許斷垣殘壁供後

而據地方耆老盧阿鬱先生現場解說,現今的「客

棧」現場原有石屋一座,為廬江輝與劉阿海二戶
共同居住,並開園種植番薯,以及養豬販售維
46 生。客棧為典型的石砌小屋,早期以芒草鋪頂, 47
山海間的古道記憶 為避「風」頭,因此房屋低矮,一般人進屋皆需
躬身而入。而古道則以西北/東南之走向斜橫於屋
前,異於今日之古道路線。今仍可見殘存石砌遺
址,每年芒花季活動時,在此備有薑母茶供遊客

草嶺古道上的第二個客棧遺址
Dali Remains of an Old Inn 草嶺古道上除了目前所知靠近大里方向的「客棧遺址」一處,據《嶐嶺及草嶺古道人文史蹟、自然
資源調查報告》指出,古道靠近遠望坑方向亦有一處客棧遺址「粉倌客棧─遠望坑大飯店」。
